ไปถามแฟนสโตนส์สิบคนว่าเพลงใดคือเพลงที่ดีที่สุดของพวกเขา อาจจะได้คำตอบมา 20 เพลง เพราะพวกเขาอยู่กันมานานแสน และทีม The Glimmer Twins ก็เขียนงานคลาสสิกให้ร็อคแอนด์โรลไว้มากมาย มันอาจจะเป็น Satisfaction ที่ได้รับคำชมเชยที่สุด หรือ Brown Sugar ที่ขึ้นชื่อว่าเอาไว้แจมกันมันส์พอๆกับ Jumping Jack Flash แต่ถ้าจะหาเพลงที่สโตนส์โชว์ฝีมือทางดนตรีไว้ได้เด็ดสะระตี่ที่สุด ผมยกให้ Sympathy For The Devil

Entry นี้เขียนขึ้นเพื่อเป็นการแก้ข่าวที่ผมไป "พิมพ์เล่น" แบบไร้ความรับผิดชอบไว้ในบล็อกแห่งหนึ่ง ว่าผมเกลียดพวกหินกลิ้ง เพราะว่าผมเป็นแฟนสี่เต่าทอง โอว ไร้สาระที่สุด แฟนเต่าทองส่วนมากจะชอบสโตนส์กันทั้งนั้น เพราะงานและ image ของพวกสโตนส์นั้นเติมเต็มส่วนที่ขาดหายไปของ Beatles ได้อย่างเหมาะเหม็ง

นั่นคือ ความเซ็กซี่,ดิบเถื่อนไม่แยแสศีลธรรมแม้แต่นิด,และ Satanism

และจะมีเพลงไหนที่มันซาต๊านนน..ซาตานได้เท่า Sympathy For The Devil จากอัลบั้ม Beggars Banquet ที่มีหน้าปกรูปโถส้วมแสนเก๋นั้น ในปี 1968 มิค แจ็กเกอร์ได้ไอเดียในการเขียนเพลงนี้มาจากหนังสือ The Master and Margarita ของ Mikhail Bulgakov ที่แฟนสาวของมิคขณะนั้น แมรี่แอนน์ เฟธฟูลเป็นผู้แนะนำให้อีกที ผู้ที่เคยอ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้บอกผมว่าเนื้อหาสนุกสนาน เป็นเรื่องของ Devil หนุ่มที่บุกมายังรัสเซียยุคปัจจุบัน และนึกสนุกเปลี่ยนแปลงทุกอย่างให้เป็นตรงกันข้ามสิ้น นักบุญกลายเป็นคนบาป ความชั่วร้ายกลายเป็นสิ่งดีงาม.... ไอเดียนี้โดนใจมิคยิ่งนัก ว่ากันว่าเนื้อหาซาตานของเพลงนี้เป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้การเขียนเนื้อเพลงในแบบ heavy metal ในกาลต่อมา

The Stones ไม่ได้เตรียมเพลงนี้ในแบบที่เราได้ยินกันมาจากบ้าน ตรงข้ามมันเริ่มต้นจากการเป็นโฟล์คซอง จนกลายมาเป็นจังหวะแซมบ้า(ที่ฟังดูเหมือนอาฟริกันหรือจังหวะกลองของพวกมนุษย์กินคนมากกว่า) เพลงเริ่มต้นจากบลูส์ช้าๆและค่อยๆสร้างอารมณ์จนแทบลุกเป็นไฟในท้ายเพลงที่รายรอบไปด้วยเสียงประสานอันโด่งดัง "Whoo-whoo!" จนจบเพลง

คีธ ริชาร์ดสเล่นทั้งเบสและลีดกีต้าร์ในเพลงนี้ ใครที่คิดว่าคีธเก่งแต่เล่นริฟฟ์หรือริธึ่มฟังเพลงนี้คงต้องนิรโทษกรรมคำพูดของท่านเพราะคีธโซโลยาวเหยียดไว้ถึงสองเบรคด้วยสำเนียงและพลังที่คมกริบและลื่นไหล ยืนยันเหตุการณ์นี้ไว้ในภาพยนตร์สารคดีชื่อเดียวกับเพลงนี้ที่กำกับโดย Jean-Luc Godard (มีดีวีดีขายแล้ว)

หลังจากสโตนส์เล่นเทคสุดท้ายของ Sympathy For The Devil เสร็จ ใครบางคนเตะตะเกียงล้มกลางห้องอัด ไฟไหม้พรึ่บ พวกเขาเซฟเทปม้วนนี้ไว้ได้ แต่เครื่องไม้เครื่องมือของพวกสโตนส์ก็เกรียมไปกับพระเพลิงไปหลายชิ้น
