Running On Empty เป็นงานบันทึกเสียงระหว่างการตระเวณแสดงของแจ็คสัน บราวน์ในปี 1977 มันไม่เหมือนงานแสดงสดทั่วไป เพราะไม่ใช่การบันทึกเสียงบนเวทีอย่างเดียวบางเพลงก็อัดกันหลังเวที ในโรงแรม บนรถบัสก็มี น่าจะเป็นครั้งแรกที่มีงานบันทึกเสียงแบบนี้ออกมา แม้นักวิจารณ์จะมองว่าเป็นงานที่บราวน์เริ่มถดถอยต่อเนื่องมาจาก The Pretender แล้ว แต่มันกลับเป็นอัลบั้มที่ขายดีที่สุดของราชาเวสต์โคสต์คนนี้ มีซิงเกิ้ลท็อป 40 ถึงสองเพลง และ The Load-Out/Stay ก็เป็นหนึ่งในนั้น

บราวน์แต่ง The Load-Out ร่วมกับ Bryan Garofalo มันเป็นเพลงที่อุทิศให้กับเหล่าบรรดา Roadies ของเขาและบรรยายชีวิตของนักดนตรีร็อคในการออกทัวร์สมัยยุค 70's ที่ต้องตะลอนไปบนรถทัวร์ รวมทั้งความสัมพันธ์ทางใจระหว่างนักดนตรีและคนดูที่เราเหล่าแฟนๆไม่อาจคาดถึง

The Load-Out เชื่อมต่อกับเพลงเก่า Stay งานเก่าของ Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs ได้อย่างงดงามทั้งท่วงทำนองและเนื้อหา และนานๆทีเราจะได้ยินเสียงร้องของเดวิด ลินด์ลีย์ นัก fiddle และ lap steel คู่บารมีของบราวน์ อันกลายเป็นสีสันที่น่ารักที่สุดของ Stay
